Objectives

The goal of this course is to equip students with a solid knowledge of the role and consequences of monetary policy for economic activity and financial markets. It is open to students specializing in economics, finance or management.

Contents

This course examines interactions between monetary policy, economic activity, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates and financial markets. Topics covered are: money and interest rates; money supply and demand; monetary policy instruments, objectives and effects; monetary policy analysis. Special attention will be devoted to the recent financial crisis.

The main reference is the book “The economics of money, banking and financial markets”, from Frederic S. Mishkin, Global Edition, Pearson.

Pre-requisites

Students should master basic macroeconomic concepts.

Students can choose between an exam (100%), or an exam (50-100%) and a 30-minute presentation (50% if better grade than the exam) on a published analysis on a chosen topic.

In case the exam is retaken, the presentation can also count for 50% of the grade (if better grade than the retaken exam).
