Objectifs

  1. Explain core theory and concepts underlying the spread and impacts of non-native species.
  2. Give key insights emerging from invasions as natural experiments in ecology and evolution.
  3. Design an empirical study using non-native species as a model system.

Contenus

Biological invasions are considered one of the most important global threats to biodiversity. Understanding the processes shaping the success of species outside of their native ranges is therefore a major goal of conservation research. However, the spread of invasive species can also be seen as natural experiments on a grand scale, giving important insights into the regulation and functioning of populations, communities and ecosystems. In this course, we elucidate the main hypotheses explaining the success and spread of invasive species, whilst emphasising the insights that biological invasions have given us into basic ecological and evolutionary processes.
