The class « Lancement et développement de start-ups : Méthodes d’analyse et expérience pratique » takes place within the Prix Strategis which is a startup contest organized by HEC Espace Entreprise (www.prixstrategis.ch). By giving the students the opportunity to analyse the semi-finalists of this contest, this class requires that they put in practice and connect the dots between the many sets of skills that the learnt during the previous semesters such as finance, marketing, sent reprise strategy, law, accounting and management. The students will also need their presentation skills and will be given the opportunity to refine those during the second workshop.

How to enroll for the class :

32 students are selected for this class. The selection will be based on a 3 minutes individual video with the following structure.

  • 1 minute for the student to present him/her self and what skills he/she can bring to the group.
  • 2 minutes for presenting a critical description of any company (student’s choice) from an investor’s perspective. Any field can be analyzed (communication, business model, financial stability…).

Organization :

Students will be assigned to groups of 4 people and each group will then be given a startup to analyze. There are no weekly classes organized for this course. The attendance will be mandatory during the only two workshops :

  • Workshop 1 : the 28th of November 2018 in Internef 233 (from 1pm to 5pm)
  • Visite of the start-ups : between the 28th of November 2018 and the 20th of February 2019
  • Workshop 2 : the 20th of March 2019 in Amphipôle 319 (from 1pm to 5pm)

Deadlines :

  • Submission of the analysis report : the 18th of March 2018
  • Pitch in front of the jury : the 27th of March 2018

Contents

The class is devised in two parts. Each of them will be the subject of one workshop :

Worskhop 1 : Through a guided case study, students will be provided with all the tools and knowledge that are necessary to the analysis and valuation of a starting and developing company. They will develop critical thinking and learn where to look for clues and information about the company’s potential.

Following this first workshop, students will be able to start their analysis. The groups will then go and visit the startup that has been assigned to them. A consultant and a HEE member will come as well and help the students if needed. After this visit, the students will conduct a throughout analysis of the company and write a report explaining precisely their recommendations.

Workshop 2 : The second workshops aims to improve student’s presentation skills. The Rhetoric Club of the Univeristy of Lausanne and Mr. Y.Darbellay will be giving this class, each emphasizing on their own skills : How to present, gain the jury’s attention and explain clearly one’s ideas will be taught by Mrs. Sanchez while the content of the pitch will be verified by Mr. Darbellay to make sure that important information is displayed and that quality content is presented to the jury.
