Objectives

The class « Lancement et Développement de Start-ups : Méthode d’Analyse et Expérience Pratique» gives students looking for an on-field experience, the unique opportunity to meet one of the most promising young start-up of Switzerland. Their work consists in analysing one of these start-ups through all the knowledge they accumulated during their Bachelor : Marketing, Finance, IS, Law, Accounting, Strategy,… these are the angles students will take into account for their report.

The eight start-ups to analyse are in fact the semi-finalists from the Prix Strategis, an entrepreneurship contest that rewards the best swiss start-up each year since 1993. This competition is organized by HEC Espace Entreprise, a student association from the campus.

Outputs resulting from the analysis are a written report of approximatively 20 pages and the oral defence of it in front of the Prix Strategis Jury.

How to enroll for the class :

32 students are selected for this class. Students will receive a mail during the Fall semester calling them to apply for the class.

Organization :

Students will form groups of 4 people and each group will then be given a startup to analyze.There are no weekly classes organized for this course. The attendance will be mandatory during the only two workshops :

  • Workshop 1 : end of November: "How to analyse a start-up"
  • Visit of the start-ups : from december to the first spring semester's week
  • Workshop 2 : end of March: "How to pitch your report"

Deadlines :

  • Submission of the analysis report : half-March
  • Pitch in front of the jury : end of March / Early April

Contents

The class is devised in two parts. Each of them will be the subject of one workshop :

Worskhop 1 : Through a guided case study, students will be provided with all the tools and knowledge that are necessary to the analysis and valuation of a starting and developing company. They will develop critical thinking and learn where to look for clues and information about the company’s potential.

Following this first workshop, students will be able to start their analysis. The groups will then go and visit the startup that has been assigned to them. A consultant and a HEE member will come as well and help the students if needed. After this visit, the students will conduct a throughout analysis of the company and write a report explaining precisely their recommendations.

Workshop 2 : The second workshops aims to improve student’s presentation skills. The Rhetoric Club of the Univeristy of Lausanne and Mr. Y.Darbellay will be giving this class, each emphasizing on their own skills : How to present, gain the jury’s attention and explain clearly one’s ideas will be taught by Mrs. Sanchez while the content of the pitch will be verified by Mr. Darbellay to make sure that important information is displayed and that quality content is presented to the jury. Students will present once and get constructive feedback.
