Objectives

Groups play a crucial role in today’s organizations as well as in our personal lives by shaping our actions, thoughts, and emotions. Effective team functioning is a key factor in organizational success. This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the nature of group and intergroup relations, how teams function and the various ways team-based and contextual factors interact to impact individual and group behavior and performance.

Contents

Defining and describing groups/teams; understanding and evaluating team performance; internal dynamics (e.g., conformity, norms, conflict, influence); identity; diversity; relations between groups; developing and coaching teams.

We provide a general basis of the important issues in the domain of group and intergroup processes during roughly half of the course. For this part, we present the theoretical basis and empirical studies. Whenever possible, course content is further explored in practical exercises that we do in class. For some sessions, students have to read papers before coming to class that we then discuss during class.

Additionally, students (in groups) specialize in one of the key content areas of the course. In this area, they do a group project that consists of theory study, some empirical data collection (interview, surveys or experiment) and the creation of a short film. These elements form the basis for a class presentation and a group report. Work on the projects roughly fills the second half of each class and the latter part of the course.

For quality of teaching purposes, the class size will be limited to a maximum of 60 participants.
