Objectives

The objectifs of this course are (1) to provide you with theoretical knowledge based on scientific evidence stemming from the domains of communication and leadership and (2) to enable you to develop your own communication and leadership skills.

Equipped with theoretical and empirical knowledge, you will be able to analyze the communication of leaders and to differentiate among more or less efficient leadership styles. You will know how to illustrate the effects of power on the verbal and nonverbal communication and you will know the factors that favor misunderstandings in communication as well as the factors that will render communication more efficient especially in a hierarchical environment.

By personal development, you will know how to adopt a persuasive communication and you will gain a better understanding of the perceptions others have of your communication and leadership style. You will improve your self-presentation skills as well as your stress management.

Contents

The course is concerned with how leaders use communication and how communication is important for leaders. In terms of leadership, we will treat topics such as the different leadership styles and their effectiveness, the dark side of leadership, emergent leadership, and the situation of women in leadership positions. With respect to communication, we will study the actions and situations in which leaders use communication and the means by which they communicate to reach their goals (e.g., persuasion, nonverbal behavior). This course is accompagnied by activities that enable the students to deepen and practice the acquired knowledge in order to foster personal development in the domains of leadership and communication.

The evaluation of the course is divided in two parts: (1) written exam during the ordinary exam session (2h) counting for 70% of the final grade, documentation non-authorized and (2) activities during the semester for 30% of the final grade (the grade for the activities will be in function of the number of activites validated; more information will be provided during the first course and during the semester in the courses).

The evaluation of the course is divided in two parts: (1) written exam during the "rattrapage" exam session (2h) counting for 70% of the final grade, documentation non-authorized and (2) the grade obtained for the activities during the semester is conserved for the "rattrapage" exam session and makes up 30% of the final grade.

2nd trial at the ordinary session after repetition ("redoublement")

The evaluation of the course is divided in two parts: (1) written exam during the ordinary exam session (2h) counting for 70% of the final grade, documentation non-authorized and (2) activities during the semester of the repetition ("redoublement") for 30% of the final grade (the grade for the activities will be in function of the number of activites validated; more information will be provided during the first course and during the semester of the repetition ("redoublement") in the courses).
