The objective of this course is to develop students’ research skills by engaging them in the practice and active discussion and critique of accounting research. In the first part of the course, students will provide a critical review of the current state-of-the-art in research on the selected topic. In the second part of the course, students will learn how to deduce new research questions and to discuss and review different research strategies to tackle these questions. They will also learn how to develop and defend a thesis, making reference to both theory and empirical evidence as support for the relevance of their enquiry, and the appropriateness of their analyses and conclusions. Finally, students will have an opportunity to polish their presentation skills while providing and receiving feedback on research in progress.

Topics covered will include all of the steps that one must pass through in order to plan and complete a research project (i.e., thesis), including: the identification of a research question; the undertaking of a literature review, including analysis and critique of prior studies; the development of hypotheses; empirical analysis and hypothesis testing; writing up results and conclusions; presenting and defending one’s research.

Relevant readings will be provided by the instructor.

There are no official prerequisites, but the class is limited to 15 participants who are registered in the 2nd year of the MCCF program.
