Research

Research areas

Organizational Behavior
In this area I have been investigating personality antecedents and situational determinants of perception of deviant workplace behavior and of economical decision-making.

Personality and individual differences
One of my research foci is the understanding of how individuals differ in processing emotion information and how such differences may be related to various behavioral outcomes.
I apply this approach to investigate the cognitive and emotional basis of emotional intelligence (EI). The basic idea is that the distinction between automatic and conscious processing in emotional experience is fundamental to both understanding the psychological dynamics of EI and accounting for additional variability in emotion-based performance.

Social psychology
My activity in this domain is related to understanding the role of different emotional aspects in biased perception and judgment.

Investigating the fluid and crystallized components of emotional intelligence

Emotion processes
My research is rooted in a social cognitive approach to personality. At the broadest level I am interested to understand how cognitive and emotional processes influence human conduct. More specifically, I study how individuals differ in processing emotion information and how such differences may be related to different behavioral outcomes. Furthermore, I employ this process-oriented approach to deepen the understanding of the construct of emotional intelligence.
Among the several descriptions of what is emotional intelligence (EI), my work stems from the conception of EI as the ability to perceive and understand emotions in oneself and others, and to use emotion information to pursue one's goals. Although I join Mayer and Salovey's conception of EI as an ability, I believe that current theorization has not clarified and explored enough what really underpins EI. Instead, a look at underlying processes, such as individual differences in emotion processes, may help to understand what constitute EI/emotional competence.

Yet, emotion processing may operate with or without consciousness and yield different outcomes depending on the level of automaticity/awareness involved. Thus, it appears fundamental to acknowledge that both automatic and conscious processing may come into play contributing to adaptive responses.

Consistent with these ideas, the research I conduct aims at exploring emotion processes underlying EI, with special attention to automatic or out of awareness processes.
