Research areas

Corporate Strategy
Professor Castañer's research broadly deals with corporate strategy and development, with special interest in when and how organizations create synergies from their portfolio (whether across activities in the same value chain, businesses, or countries), and how they successfully develop through internal ventures, acquisitions and/or alliances. Relatedly, he is interested in how integration is achieved within and across organizations.

He is also conducting research on creativity and innovation, including in cultural organizations and creative industries.

Some of his past research dealt with territorial competitiveness, and industrial policy.

Teaching and other activities
At HEC Lausanne, Prof. Castañer teaches a master course on corporate strategy and development and a PhD seminar on interorganizational relations and strategies (alliances and acquisitions). He has also taught strategy at undergraduate and graduate levels at HEC Paris, ESADE (Barcelona), the Carlson School of Management (U. of Minnesota), the CERISDI (Italy), the Sibelius Academy (Finland), Georgetown University (Geneva Summer School) and the University of Barcelona.

He has published on strategic planning and organizational integration in the Administrative Science Quarterly, intraorganizational lobbying in the Journal of Management Studies, product expansion mode choice and governance in the Strategic Management Journal, synergies and integration in acquisitions at the Journal of Management and artistic innovation in the Journal of Cultural Economics, among other publications. For his research, he has received distinctions from the Academy of Management (AOM) and the Association for Cultural Economics International.

Dr. Castañer has been a member of the Research Committee of the Business Policy and Strategy (BPS) division of the Academy of Management (AOM), and a representative at large of the Corporate Strategy & Governance Interest Group of the Strategic Management Society (SMS). Currently, he is a member of the Executive Committee of the BPS division of the AOM, and a representative at large of Strategy Process Interest Group of the SMS. He further serves in the Editorial Review Board of the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science and the Strategic Management Journal.

Xavier has taught in the executive education programs for Bouygues (France) and SIG (Switzerland), the cultural management program at ESADE, and he is co-director of the program in Cultural Management of the Universities of Genève and Lausanne. He has also consulted for private and public organizations, including the City Council of Barcelona and the Catalan Institute for Women.
